How to Register a WeChat Account the Right Way

WeChat is easy to use once you're set up, but the sign-up process trips up a lot of first-time users — mostly because of one step that has no real equivalent on apps like WhatsApp or Instagram: friend verification. This guide walks through the official process end to end, using nothing but WeChat's own sign-up flow.

Everything below follows WeChat's standard registration process. There are no shortcuts here that involve fake identities, virtual numbers, or spoofed locations — those methods violate WeChat's terms of service and put your account at risk of being permanently banned.

1. Install the official app

Download WeChat from the Apple App Store or Google Play in your own country's store. Avoid installing APK files from random websites — official app stores are the only place you can be sure the app hasn't been tampered with.

2. Start sign-up with a real phone number

Open the app and choose Sign Up. WeChat will ask for a mobile number it can send a verification code to. Use a number that is genuinely yours and that you can keep receiving messages on — WeChat ties your account recovery to this number, so a borrowed or disposable number will cause problems later if you ever get locked out.

What if your number is outside China?

WeChat accepts international numbers for sign-up. The verification code and initial setup work the same way regardless of country code — the extra checks described below are simply WeChat's standard anti-spam process for any brand-new account, not something specific to foreign numbers.

2. Complete the friend-verification step

This is the part that surprises most new users. To cut down on spam and bot accounts, WeChat frequently requires a brand-new account to be vouched for by an existing WeChat user before it becomes fully active. In practice this means:

1You finish entering your phone number and basic details in the app.
2WeChat generates a QR code or verification screen tied to your new account.
3An existing WeChat contact — a friend, family member, or (if you don't have one yet) a verification service — scans that code or confirms the request from their own account within a short time window.
4Once confirmed, your account unlocks fully.

3. Set up your profile
